Lifting Voices: From Study NT Ambassador to Community Advocate
International student graduate, Lloyd Calimag, shares his story:
"Originally from the Philippines, I moved to Darwin to pursue my studies and create new opportunities for myself. What began as a journey for education gradually became a deeper commitment to community, advocacy, and meaningful contribution.
I studied Humanitarian and Community Studies, a field that reflects my passion for walking alongside others and contributing to community wellbeing. During my time as an international student, I developed a strong desire to serve my community and fellow international students, particularly those navigating the challenges of living far from home. This passion led me to become an advocate for humanitarian rights, gender equality, and community empowerment.
I was also given the opportunity to serve as an Equity Officer with the Council of International Students Australia, where I worked to amplify student voices and promote inclusion and fairness for international students across the country.
As a Study NT Ambassador, I built valuable networks and connections, and I was grateful to contribute to supporting fellow students and the wider community, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience strengthened my leadership skills and deepened my commitment to community engagement.
After graduating, I gradually continued my journey in the community sector. I worked as a Mental Health Recovery Worker, then as a Case Manager in a humanitarian settlement program, before becoming an Intensive Case Manager supporting young people in the justice system through a youth throughcare program. Through these roles, I had the valuable experience of working alongside First Nations peoples, an experience I deeply value and continue to learn from. These opportunities also allowed me to share my own journey with fellow migrants, international students, and people across all sectors of the community, creating spaces for connection and understanding.
Today, I am working as a Community Legal Education Educator and Coordinator, where I engage with vulnerable individuals and the wider community across different sectors, increasing awareness of their rights and providing accessible legal education.
My humble beginnings as an international student gradually shaped my journey today. Each experience has guided my passion for working with communities and continuing to grow in this space.
What I truly love about the Northern Territory is its strong sense of community and rich cultural diversity. The NT is a place where people genuinely look out for one another, and where you can build meaningful connections across cultures. It offers a unique opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, while contributing in meaningful ways. I hope to continue this journey by advocating for people and empowering them to uplift and strengthen their communities."
