
International education and training sector leaders gather in Darwin
The Study NT Industry Forum 2026 was successfully held on 9 June 2026 at Oaks Darwin Elan Hotel, bringing together International Education and Training (IET) providers, government representatives and seven industry experts to discuss opportunities and challenges facing the sector.
The Forum themed “Adapting for Tomorrow: International Education in a Changing Landscape” commenced with a welcome address from Khoda Patel MLA, Assistant Minister for International Education, followed by opening remarks from Kelly Ralston, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations.
The event was held at a critical time for the international education sector, which continues to face challenges including changes to Commonwealth migration and visa settings, increasing regulatory demands, global geopolitical uncertainty, rising living costs, and intensified competition between international study destination.
The Forum provided a valuable platform for Northern Territory IET providers, government representatives, and industry specialists to share sector updates, explore innovative approaches, and support a coordinated response to the evolving international education landscape. It also strengthened partnerships across the sector by encouraging collaboration between industry stakeholders.
Participants gained valuable insights from a range of expert speakers, including:
- Hon. Phil Honeywood, Chief Executive Officer, International Education Association of Australia (IEAA), who provided an overview of the national policy environment, outlining the implications of recent reforms and the need for providers to remain agile as regulatory settings continue to evolve.
- Dirk Mulder, Founder of The Koala News, highlighted that strong advocacy will be essential to maintain Australia’s reputation as a destination of choice while navigating policy uncertainty and heightened global competition.
- Claire Field, Principal, Claire Field and Associates, delivered strategic advice and insights and encouraged providers to take a long-term approach to institutional sustainability.
- James Martin, Managing Director, Insider Studios, explored emerging trends in student decision-making and digital engagement, and highlighted the growing influence of user-generated content and authentic student voices in recruitment campaigns.
- Keith Lim, Head of Social Listening, Voyage, presented on the importance of social listening and understanding student sentiment incl. emerging trends.
- Ellen Tan, Senior Manager, Acumen, discussed Southeast Asia market insights and growing transnational education partnership opportunities.
- Himanshu Rai, Team Leader, Headspace, highlighted student wellbeing initiatives and practical ways institutions can implement to support international students.
The Forum concluded with remarks from Renée Tennent, Director Study NT, reinforcing the importance of sector-wide collaboration, and encouraging stakeholders to continue working together to ensure the Northern Territory remains an attractive and welcoming destination for international students.
