Meet Kathryn

Kathryn Vera Cruz in Darwin Waterfront

I arrived in Australia in April 2023, I was amazed at how people in the Northern Territory (not just my fellow Filipinos, but also people with different cultures) give me a sense of belongingness and how they easily helped me adapt to the environment. Without any doubt, the NT has its vibrant diverse culture, but also pristine educational institutions and courses.

Back in the Philippines, I was the most outstanding student of town in 2011, aced the civil service examination (professional level), and maintained a consistent scholarship from high school through to college. Furthermore, I used to join different competitions, be a top achiever, and with God’s help, graduated as Cum Laude (with Latin honours) from the Technological University of the Philippine. I, then, started working as a senior software engineer for 6.5 years. Now, in Australia, being a recipient of the prestigious Study in Australia’s Northern Territory Scholarship is such a pleasure. Beyond academia, I actively contribute to the community by being a regular blood and plasma donor in the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. As a dedicated MCGI Cares Volunteer, I have participated in several coastal clean-up initiative in various NT beaches. My journey has been very colourful by balancing both academia, and also doing the things that I am passionate about. Exploring the beautiful iconic places of the Territory is one of my bucket list goals. I was also able to embrace an active and balanced lifestyle with outdoor adventures, which include sunset watching, hiking, camping and wildlife interacting.

I know that living in the world is about living life ‘with purpose’ and contributing to the wellbeing of the community. My commitment to making positive impact, and the genuine relationships formed along the way have made my time in the NT not just a plain academic journey, but an enriching life experience.
