Brewing Opportunities in the Top End: Prabin’s Story
From Nepal to Darwin, Prabin Maharjan has turned his passion for coffee and community into an inspiring success story — one that’s helping others find their own opportunities in the Northern Territory.
Arriving in Australia as an international student, Prabin embraced the Territory’s warm, multicultural environment and entrepreneurial spirit. Today, he’s the proud owner of Dukes Cafe + Eatery and the founder of Brew Dreams Coffee Training, a not-for-profit barista training program making a real difference in the community.
Through his ventures, Prabin has created opportunities not only for himself but also for others — equipping locals and international students with hands-on skills that open doors to employment, confidence and connection.
“I wanted to give back to the community that has supported me,” Prabin shared with SBS News. “Training others gives them a chance to build new skills and start their own journey in the hospitality industry.”
His work directly addresses one of the Territory’s key challenges — the local worker shortage — while showcasing how international students and graduates contribute meaningfully to the NT’s workforce, culture and community life.
Prabin’s story reflects the essence of what makes the Northern Territory special: opportunity, diversity and a genuine sense of belonging. It’s a place where ambition meets support, and where international students can turn their dreams into reality.
