Meet Nithya Yamasinghe

In 2023, I made the life-changing decision to leave my job as a full-time Software Engineer in Sri Lanka and move to Darwin to pursue a Master of Information Technology (Software Engineering) at Charles Darwin University (CDU). This transition marked a leap of faith, stepping out of my comfort zone to explore new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Darwin’s supportive and inclusive environment made the challenges of starting over worthwhile. I was fortunate to take on multiple positions and job opportunities at CDU, allowing me to contribute to the community while enhancing my skills. These roles have been instrumental in shaping my journey and reinforcing my passion for building technology-driven solutions.
Leadership has been a cornerstone of my time in Darwin. As the President of the Women’s Collective for Innovation and Change (WCIC) and Vice President of the CDU IT Students' Association (ITSA), I have worked to create platforms for collaboration and support, ensuring students feel connected and empowered. These roles have allowed me to channel my passion for fostering growth and inclusivity into meaningful initiatives.
Throughout this journey, I have been honoured with recognitions that reflect my dedication and impact, including being a Finalist for the Study NT International Student of the Year 2024, as well as receiving the CDU IT Code Fair Overall Award for Outstanding Entrant at NT Digital Excellence Awards 2024. These achievements are not just milestones but reminders of the possibilities that come with perseverance and hard work.
Darwin has also reignited my love for volunteering, giving me the opportunity to give back to the community. Leaving my established career was a bold step, but the welcoming and vibrant spirit of Darwin has made this chapter of my life truly fulfilling. I look forward to learning, growing, and making a positive impact every day.
