Meet Ishan Sumanasekara

Ishan

When I arrived in the Northern Territory, I was welcomed by its diverse culture, including the Sri Lankan community that gave me a strong sense of belonging. The warm weather, similar to Sri Lanka, made adapting to the environment even easier. The region’s emerging industries, particularly in advanced manufacturing, align perfectly with my career goals and I look forward to continuing my work in smart manufacturing and AI-driven systems while contributing to the region’s development.

Before moving to Australia, I worked on various international projects, including contributions to IMechE Formula Student and leading innovative initiatives at MAS Intimates. I volunteered with AIESEC in University of Moratuwa and AIESEC Colombo South as an Incoming Global Volunteer (iGV) for the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) 7.0 & 8.0. I supported international volunteers during their stay in Sri Lanka including facilitated community-driven initiatives, promoting cultural exchanges and empowering volunteers through social projects.

The opportunity to study at Charles Darwin University and receive the prestigious Study in Australia’s Northern Territory Scholarship is an exciting step in my academic and professional journey. In addition to my studies, I am committed to giving back to the community. I joined the NT Emergency Services as a volunteer just a few weeks after my arrival, showcasing my passion for helping others. I became a member of Engineers Australia and have participated in several events organised by them. The people I met there have been incredibly friendly, generously sharing their knowledge and experiences with me.

I also enjoy exploring the natural beauty of the Territory through activities like camping and wildlife interaction. My time in the Northern Territory has already been filled with purpose, and I am eager to continue learning, contributing, and growing both personally and professionally.
