Meet SK MAHEDI HASAN AKASH

My journey to Darwin began in Bangladesh, where I spent years studying how natural disasters shape the lives of people living in vulnerable coastal areas.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Disaster Management from Patuakhali Science and Technology University, and that experience is exactly what brought me to the Territory. I saw a striking connection between the floods and environmental challenges of my home country and those faced here in Northern Australia. I realized that to truly help, I needed more than just environmental data I needed the professional skills to support people on a human level. This inspired my shift into Social Work, where I can focus on the well-being and resilience of those who need it most.

"Darwin is a unique place that offers the best of both worlds it’s a beautiful environment where I can focus on my studies and find peace in nature at the same time."

Giving back has always been part of who I am. Back home, I was a dedicated volunteer with Badhan, a blood donation organization, and I’m proud to continue that mission here by volunteering with the Australian Red Cross. For me, these connections are what make a new city feel like home.

Looking ahead, I hope to work with international organizations to provide mental health support and crisis relief. My goal is to be on the ground, helping vulnerable communities and make them feel safe, comfortable, and empowered. When I have a moment to myself, you’ll usually find me with a good book or out exploring the natural beauty that makes this part of the world so special.
