Meet Xingyu Shen

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Italian Literature from Sichuan International Studies University and a Master’s degree in Communication from the University of Florence, which have developed strong analytical skills and cross-cultural communication abilities. However, while studying and living in Italy, one of the world’s fastest-aging countries, I witnessed how demographic changes bring about new social problems. At the same time, I saw technology rapidly transforming the field of language, prompting reflection on which human needs are irreplaceable.

I realized that meaningful interpersonal connections and culturally sensitive support cannot be automated. To better adapt to this shift, I attended courses like cultural anthropology and sociolinguistics, learning to analyze social structures—the cornerstone of ethical practice.

I chose the Northern Territory for both professional and personal reasons. Charles Darwin University’s Master of Social Work program offers intensive internships and a theory-oriented curriculum, which contributes to one of the highest graduate employment rates in Australia. Learning environment is also important: studying alongside Indigenous communities provides an immersive cultural education that no textbook can provide. Having grown up in Chongqing, one of China’s hottest cities, I am no stranger to humidity and heat, so Darwin’s climate will not prevent me from focusing on the challenging coursework ahead.

The scholarship will allow me to fully dedicate myself to academic and community life. My goal is to become a professional social worker in Australia’s multicultural environment and contribute to the future of the community.
