Meet Elysia

I am Elysia and I was born and raised in Darwin. I am now studying in my beautiful hometown and working towards a double degree in a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences / Doctor of Medicine. With two years completed and another four years to go I am already itching to graduate. I look forward travelling around the Northern Territory putting my skills to use and better understanding the differing health needs throughout the region, while learning about the rich culture and history of the Territory.

I decided to remain in Darwin for my university studies, not only because my course has a large focus on rural and remote health - themes I feel strongly about after growing up in the Northern Territory - but also because Darwin is home for me. I could not imagine moving to a city without my family and friends, or being in a town where I would have to hop on a plane to visit the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets on a Thursday night!

Similarly, I did not want to be too far away from the delicious Vietnamese beef noodle soup, available at one of the Darwin Waterfront restaurants, or the rum-and-raisin-flavoured ice-cream I usually get afterwards. The convenience of uncongested roads here in Darwin also makes life a little easier when I travel to the Nightcliff foreshore during sunset to fit in some exercise between my studies. However, my favourite part of this town is the warmth and friendliness of all Darwinians, which is really what makes this city home for me.

Outside of my studies, I do casual work in the optical industry, take piano and language lessons, and tutor school children. All these activities have given me the opportunity to not only learn new skills, but to also meet many new people in my community.

This year, I have been lucky enough to become a Student Ambassador for StudyNT and am eager to get involved in more opportunities and share my experiences in studying, living and working in the Northern Territory.
